Our approach
Supporting patients. Preserving human judgment.
Hygia uses AI to support patients between clinical visits and help healthcare organizations understand what may need attention. Responsible use begins with a clearly defined role for Gia, ongoing quality evaluation, and workflows that keep clinical decisions with qualified healthcare professionals.
This page describes Gia as offered through participating healthcare organizations. The website demonstration does not connect to a visitor’s care team or medical records.
Defined boundaries
A clear role for Gia
Gia is an AI-powered health companion. She helps patients prepare for appointments, understand information provided by their care team, follow through on next steps, and share questions or concerns.
Gia is not a human healthcare professional. She does not diagnose conditions, prescribe treatment, or replace clinical judgment. Her role is to support the relationship between patients and the people responsible for their care.
Quality oversight
Ongoing evaluation and improvement
Hygia uses automated evaluation to assess interactions with Gia against defined standards for safety, communication quality, and consistency of information. Findings help our clinical and engineering teams identify patterns and guide improvements over time.
This evaluation supports ongoing quality oversight. It does not mean that a clinician reviews every conversation or that the service provides continuous clinical monitoring.
Organizational collaboration
Working within the organization’s care workflows
Hygia works with participating healthcare organizations to configure workflows for surfacing information that may warrant human attention. These workflows reflect the organization’s care processes, designated responsibilities, and patient population.
Information surfaced for review may include reported changes in health, medication concerns, safety concerns, or follow-up needs. Relevant context helps the appropriate team understand what the patient shared and why it may need attention.
Healthcare organizations remain responsible for reviewing information, determining the appropriate response, and making clinical decisions. Available workflows and response times vary by organization and implementation.
Clear expectations
Transparency about AI’s limitations
AI can misunderstand information or produce responses that are incomplete or inaccurate. Software and connectivity interruptions can also affect availability.
Patients should not rely on Gia as the sole basis for a medical decision. Questions about symptoms, diagnosis, medications, treatment, or changes in health should be directed to an appropriate healthcare professional.
Urgent & emergency needs
Clear expectations for urgent needs
Gia is not an emergency service and should not be relied upon to detect or respond to a medical emergency. The service is not continuously monitored, and sharing a concern with Gia does not guarantee immediate review or a response from a healthcare professional.
For urgent medical concerns, contact your healthcare provider directly. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number.
